Simon Wootton BSc Hons MBA
Irwell Valley Consulting Limited was established by Simon Wootton, who was previously Chief Accountable Officer at NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale CCG, and has extensive senior public sector and independent sector management experience, as well as senior pharmaceutical sales experience.
Simon commenced his career in the NHS as a Biochemist working at Halifax Infirmary before becoming a General Management Trainee at Birch Hill Hospital before working in a GP fundholding practice in Rochdale.
He was the Greater Manchester (GM) CCG lead on Estates, and GM CCG lead on Elective Care. He has, in his previous role as Chief Operating Officer of North Manchester CCG, successfully established and was the Executive lead for the Manchester Integrated Care gateway across the 3 Manchester CCGs and Manchester City Council, and led on the establishment of a joint health and social care discharge team in the local hospital, and closure and relocation of staff of a walk- in centre. He has also led the integration of CCG and Local Authority staff to form a Strategic Commissioning Function as part of GM Devolution plans.
He has previously been Chief Executive of an independent mental health services provider, and prior to this was a Healthcare Consultant, a Regional Manager and an NHS Business Unit Manager in the pharmaceutical Industry. He has written and had published books on Strategic Planning, Brain Training and Managing Public Services, and he organises each year a Children’s Support Holiday for type 1 diabetic children, for a national charity, Diabetes UK.
Simon has an extensive network of colleagues who he can draw on to assist in projects, providing Irwell Valley Consulting with a mix of skills and expertise to help clients achieve their goals.
What Clients Say
Dr Mike Burrows
AHSN Network Coordination Director, NHS Greater Manchester
Simon has a rare combination of being both a very capable NHS leader but also with a great track record of hands on delivery of service change. He has an understated style of leadership but is determined and steadfast when the situation requires it. Under his leadership a very effective model of healthcare has been developed in Rochdale and I see Simon as being the key architect of this work building a very capable team around him. He has demonstrated a strong appetite for innovation and developing novel solutions to health systems design.
Chief Executive, Greater Manchester Health & Social Care Partnership
Want to give recognition and thanks to @SimonWootton2 on his final day as Chief Officer at @NHSHMR. Been a great servant who has led real progress in integrating & improving care.
Dr. Martin Whiting
Clinical Accountable Officer, North Manchester CCG
He had many achievements during his time, in fact simply achieving meaningful change in commissioned services in North Manchester is remarkable in itself but he drove through a suite of changes to community services including a novel crisis response service, palliative care services, investment in frailty services and a service that manages referrals for all GPs. In all this and in routine work, he demonstrates perseverance with a calm and methodical approach. He is well able to persuade and modify attitudes in others and is an excellent builder of teams
Dr Chris Duffy
Dr Chris Duffy, Chair, NHS HMR CCG
During this time Simon was involved in driving a lot of the integration of health and social care work that has been going on in the borough, and thanks to that the CCG and the local authority are in a much better position than most localities across Greater Manchester. Prescribing and quality data has improved too and it is testament to Simon’s expertise and hard work in these fields, and I wish him the very best for the future.
